These are the flyers that have been sent out over the years to invite the neighborhood to join in the wonderful things we are accomplishing each year in Ferry Point Park.

Anna A. and Paul G. with grandchildren have come to participate, but no one else out of our group has shown the least bit of interest in our Park.

we have been told that the park will need some extra funding for the maintenance of these saplings. If you have any resources for future funding let us know we will be using the Neighborhood Open Space Coalitions 501C3 for recording and dispersing the contributions.

Until we can establish a 501C3 for the Friends of Ferry Point Park. Thank you again Dorothea Poggi

Ferry Point Park Becomes a Sept.11 th Memorial Forest The Prince of Monaco donates I small tree for each life loss in the Twin Tower Sept 11, 2001 attack

“It’s My Park Day” Spring 2007

We had some really goods news about the Sept. 11 Hilltop Memorial that we requested years ago at Ferry Point Park.

It is actually going to happen......starting this Spring of 2007

there will be a Memorial grove of somewhat mature white flowering trees planted on the hilltop . There will be some renovation of the Crescent shaped Iron Fence and a plaque connecting this Memorial Grove with the 4 others, each in a Borough Park that has a view of the Manhattan Skyline.

Separately but Along with this project, the Prince of Monaco has

also paid for 3000? saplings of various types to be planted in

Ferry Point as a Memorial to each of the lives lost during the attack.

These trees will also replace the 200 that were destroyed by the

Golf Developer, and the hundreds

that will be destroyed by Pepsi

within the next 2 years....

This is wonderful news as it will give Ferry Point an added purpose once again as it had when it was built for the Worlds Fair in 1939. It was to be a place for visitors to stretch their legs after their long journey to the Fair from other states.

The Master Plan of the Parks Department states that there will still be 2 baseball fields, cricket fields, proposed synthetic soccer field, comfort station, and more repaved greenway paths.

The planting of the saplings hopefully will start this Fall. If you know of some teenagers or adult volunteers to help plant the saplings let us know....Don’t forget our annual plantings and Daffodil Projects in the Park for the younger children.

Call us at 718-892-7303.

Details: Partnerships for parks will bring us the tools, bags, gloves. Ferry Point Community Advocates will donate frankfurters/soda/water. Signs are produced and donated by Alpha Art Inc. Bathrooms available thanks to TBTA (under 12) and Capri Motel with guardian. There will be some giveaways?

First Banner created for the FPPark West Coalition that we formed to collect 600 names to stipulate to the Parks Dept. that we want to keep this West side of the Park a Free Public Park and not a large concession such as the expansion of the future Golf Course. We then attended all the Community Bd. 10 Parks Committee meetings and proceeded to haunt the Parks Department to get the basic maintenance chores done. Jimi Hughe succeeded in getting the old dead tree limbs cut. He also succeeded in ghetting some of the overgrown edges of the Park expanded again to be used y the visitors.Jimi then got the BBQ areas put in and we worked together to get the Parking lot filled to a better condition. Dotti wrote an 18 page Master Plan which she sent to most everyone that would be interested. Then she created a 4ft x 8 ft. graphic display which she presented to the Community Board and at the Bronx Park Speak Up in order to reach out to a network of Park Groups. Our concerns over the possible eaxpansion of a future concession such as the golf Course, and the neglect of all concerned to test the toxic waters that are most likely entering the East River from under the future Golf Course and the non specific rain run off due to elevating this land about grade elevated a blind spot in the eyes of the community of Throggs Neck to the West Side of this Park.. 2006 some of the paperwork involved in the Littoral Zone Cleanup

we document as closely as possible each piece of

debris collected on Sept. 15th? each year.

Ferry Point Park Memorial Grove Remembers 9/11 Victims

Bronx Times-Reporter

The Ferry Point Park 9/11 Memorial Grove has dealt with many problems during its first year, but community activists are always determined to keep the memorial intact.

In late 2007, the City Department of Parks and Recreation planted 15 white flowering redbud trees at the southern tip of Ferry Point Park in a project meant to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

An additional 3,000 saplings that were donated by Prince Albert II of Monaco were also planted in the park to commemorate the approximate number of people who lost their lives in the attacks.

In the four years of the Ferry Point 9/11 Memorial Grove’s existence, however, the memorial trees have dealt with an unfortunate history of vandalism.

In 2008 alone, the memorial trees were stolen by coldhearted thieves three separate times, forcing local residents, families of 9/11 victims, elected officials, and high school students to voluntarily replant the trees.

“It was a terrible time because we could never figure out who stole trees that remember the events of September 11th,” said Dotti Poggi, founder of Friends of Ferry Point Park. “We were very grateful to have all the help that we got to replant the trees. It’s one of our most loved sections of our park.”

The area of Ferry Point Park was selected as one of four locations in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island that face or overlook Ground Zero. The grove is located in a crescent-shaped area near the Whitestone Bridge overlooking the Hudson River. On a clear day, passersby visiting the Ferry Point 9/11 Memorial Grove have a clear view of where the World Trade Center once stood.

Each memorial grove in New York City is called “viewshed groves,” meaning that each overlooks the area in Lower Manhattan. The trees stand between 10 and 20 feet high and stand-out among the other trees in Ferry Point Park with their bold white blossoms, and are separated by a small plaque with a dedication to the victims of 9/11.

Fortunately, Poggi says the grove has remained intact over the last few years and it is something that Friends of Ferry Point Park makes sure continues to bloom during the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

“When you have a dedicated area in a park, or anywhere, that honors those who lost their lives and fought to save others lives, it really means something,” Poggi said. “We have a staff that constantly cares for the Ferry Point Memorial Grove because it is something we are certainly proud of.”

APoggi said every year the site is visited frequently on September 11th. With the 10th this year, she urges local residents to visit the beloved viewshed grove and pray for those who perished.
